What are container formats?:
Well, in short: If you take a video file, it usually has a file
name extension (the last part of the file name, after the last dot).
Here are some very popular ones: AVI, MP3, 3GP, MKV (stands for
Matroska)
Files with the extensions AVI MP4 and 3GP are supported natively by HDX4 (MPEG4). For additional formats, like Matroska (usually .mkv) you will need appropriate DirectShow filters. Details about the following container formats were partly taken from the online encyclopedia Wikipedia:
- MPEG4 An ISO/IEC standard 14496 developed by the Moving Picture
Experts Group (MPEG), the committee that also developed MPEG-1
and MPEG-2. These standards made interactive video on CD-ROM,
DVD and Digital Television possible. MPEG4 is the result of
another international effort involving hundreds of researchers
and engineers from all over the world. MPEG4 was finalized
in October 1998 and became an International Standard in 1999.
MPEG4 used for both streaming and downloadable web content,
and is also the video format employed by a growing number of
portable video recorders. One of the best-known MPEG4 encoders
is DivX which since version 5 has been fully standard-compliant
MPEG4 encoder.
- AVI (short for Audio Video Interleave) is a multimedia format defined by Microsoft, which is derived from the RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) introduced for Microsoft Windows 3.1. On computer systems running Microsoft Windows, AVI is the de facto standard for A/V files. AVI stores audio and video in interleaved data structures called streams. The AVI file basically forms a container for the streams inside, the data itself can be encoded using several different methods. Interpretation of these streams is performed by a codec. The FourCC (Four Character Code) is an indicator which identifies the format of the individual data streams contained in the AVI file.
- MP4 is the container intended for MPEG4 content by the Moving Picture Experts Group. The MP4 file format is originally based on Apple's Quicktime file format. MP4 files can store multimedia content like multiple video and audio tracks, subtitles, 2D and 3D graphics and images. Using appropriate software, this content can be streamed over the internet in realtime. It is, however, uncommon to embed all kinds of content in MP4 files, for the sake of compatibility between different applications. In theory this is not much of a problem as "private" tags (called Flags or Atoms) can be used for such, it just makes not much sense.
- 3GP files are used to store data intended for usage on mobile devices, especially videos with very high compression. It is for instance used by mobile phones. One minute of video including audio just consumes half a megabyte of space which equals merely 30 megabytes for one hour of full-motion video.
