What is Mpeg? Mpeg Software Review, Mpeg File Format Overview
What is MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4 (or MP4
)?
- MPEG An ISO/ITU
standard for compressing video offering lossy compression technique
(some data of the original image is lost during the compression).
- MPEG also called:
MJPEG, Moving Pictures Experts Group, Moving JPEG, Motion Pictures
Experts Group, and Motion JPEG MPEG (pronounced M-peg), which
stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, is the name of family
of standards used for coding audio-visual information (e.g.,
movies, video, music) in a digital compressed format. The major
advantage of MPEG compared to other video and audio coding formats
is that MPEG files are much smaller for the same quality. This
is because MPEG uses very sophisticated compression techniques.
- MPEG also refers
to the family of digital video compression standards and file
formats developed by the group. MPEG generally produces better-quality
video than competing formats, such as Video for Windows, Indeo
and QuickTime.
- MPEG Files can
be decoded by special hardware or by software. MPEG achieves
high compression rate by storing only the changes from one frame
to another, instead of each entire frame. The video information
is then encoded using a technique called DCT.
- MPEG Files MPEG
uses a type of lossy compression, since some data is removed.
But the diminishment of data is generally imperceptible to the
human eye.
- What is MPEG-1?
- An ISO/IEC (International Organization for Standardization/
International Electrotechnical Commission) standard for medium
quality and medium bitrate video and audio compression. It allows
video to be compressed by the ratios in the range of 50:1 to
100:1, depending on image sequence type and desired quality.
The encoded data rate is targeted at 1.5Mb/s - this was a reasonable
transfer rate of a double-speed CD-ROM player (including audio
and video). VHS-quality playback is expected from this level
of compression. The Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG) also
established the MPEG-2 standard for high-quality video playback
at a higher data rates. MPEG-1 is used in encoding video for
VCD.
- What is MPEG2?
- A video standard developed by MPEG group, is often used in
digital TVs, DVD movies and in SVCDs. An encoding standard designed
as an extension of the MPEG-1 international standard for digital
compression of audio and video signals. MPEG-1 was designed
to code progressively scanned video at bit rates up to about
1.5 Mbit/s for applications such as CD-i. MPEG2 is directed
at broadcast formats at higher data rates; it provides increased
support for efficiently coding interlaced video, supports a
wide range of bit rates and provides for multichannel surround
sound coding such as PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG audio.
- What is MPEG4 ( or MP4 )?
- An ISO/IEC standard 14496 developed by the Moving Picture
Experts Group (MPEG), the committee that also developed MPEG-1
and MPEG2. These standards made interactive video on CD-ROM,
DVD and Digital Television possible. MPEG4 is the result of
another international effort involving hundreds of researchers
and engineers from all over the world. MPEG4 ( or MP4 ) was
finalized in October 1998 and became an International Standard
in 1999. MPEG4 ( or MP4 ) used for both streaming and downloadable
web content, and is also the video format employed by a growing
number of portable video recorders. One of the best-known MPEG4
( or MP4 ) encoders is DivX which since version 5 has been fully
standard-compliant MPEG4 ( or MP4 ) encoder. read more about

- What is MPEG3?
- A proposed variant of the MPEG video and audio compression
algorithm and file format. MPEG3 was intended as an extension
of MPEG2 to cater for HDTV but was eventually merged into MPEG2.
MPEG3 should not be confused with MP3 which is MPEG-1 layer
3 popularly used for audio encoding.
- What is MPEG7?
- is an ISO/IEC standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts
Group. MPEG7, formally named ¡°Multimedia Content Description
Interface¡±, is a standard for describing the multimedia content
data that supports some degree of interpretation of the information¡¯s
meaning, Unlike previous MPEG standards aimed at encoding, MPEG-7
is not aimed at any one application in particular; rather, the
elements that MPEG-7 standardizes support as broad a range of
applications as possible.
- What is MPEG Audio?
MPEG Audio is a family of generic standards for low bit-rate
coding: MPEG Layer I - low complexity, good for consumer recording;
MPEG Layer II - high efficiency with medium complexity, good
for professional recording and for broadcast; MPEG Layer III
- high complexity and high efficiency, suitable for very low
bit-rates application.
- MPEG files format Summary
- There are three major MPEG standards: MPEG-1, MPEG2 and MPEG4.
The most common implementations of the MPEG-1 standard
provide a video resolution of 352-by-240 at 30 frames per second
(fps). This produces video quality slightly below the quality
of conventional VCR videos. MPEG2 offers resolutions
of 720x480 and 1280x720 at 60 fps, with full CD-quality audio.
This is sufficient for all the major TV standards, including
NTSC, and even HDTV. MPEG2 is used by DVD-ROMs. MPEG2 can compress
a 2 hour video into a few gigabytes. While decompressing an
MPEG2 data stream requires only modest computing power, encoding
video in MPEG2 format requires significantly more processing
power. MPEG4 is a graphics and video compression algorithm
standard that is based on MPEG-1 and MPEG2 and Apple QuickTime
technology. Wavelet-based MPEG4 files are smaller than JPEG
or QuickTime files, so they are designed to transmit video and
images over a narrower bandwidth and can mix video with text,
graphics and 2-D and 3-D animation layers. MPEG4 was standardized
in October 1998! read more about how to Convert
