- What is DVD?
- DVD is the new generation of optical disc storage technology.
DVD is essentially a bigger, faster CD that can hold cinema-like
video, better-than-CD audio, still photos, and computer data.
DVD aims to encompass home entertainment, computers, and business
information with a single digital format. It has replaced laserdisc,
is well on the way to replacing videotape and video game cartridges,
and could eventually replace audio CD and CD-ROM. DVD has widespread
support from all major electronics companies, all major computer
hardware companies, and all major movie and music studios. With
this unprecedented support, DVD became the most successful consumer
electronics product of all time in less than three years of
its introduction. In 2003, six years after introduction, there
were over 250 million DVD playback devices worldwide, counting
DVD players, DVD PCs, and DVD game consoles. This was more than
half the numbers of VCRs, setting DVD up to become the new standard
for video publishing.
- What is DVD5?
- A single-sided, single layer DVD that can hold up to 4.7GB
(120 minutes) of high quality audio and video data. All DVDs
are made from two substrates that are bonded together, and the
second substrate on a DVD5 is a data-less layer that does not
contain any pits.
- What is DVD9?
- A single-sided, dual-layer DVD that can hold 8.54GB (or fours
hours) of audio and video data. It should be noted that DVD-RW
and DVD+RW do not support DVD9.
- What is DVD10?
- A double sided single layer DVD. Video DVD, DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W
support this format. Effectively this means that DVD10 is a
dual-sided DVD5 and can hold 8.75 gigabytes of data with 4.38
gigabytes on each side. Two-sided discs need to be flipped over
in order to access the other data side. Unfortunately many blank
DVD media advertisers mislead customers to believe that these
discs are actually blank DVD 9 discs in hope that they could
copy their dual-layer discs directly to blank discs.
- What is DVD18?
- A double sided dual layer DVD which can fit up to 17 GB or
15.9 computer GB which some commercial video DVDs are using
today (a DVD18 is basicly four pressed plastic DVD5s pressed
together, they are not burned). Video DVD supports this format
but DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W does not support this format.
- What is mini-DVD?
- miniDVD is a DVD video written onto a CD-R(W) instead of a
DVD disc. mini-DVD is also sometimes called cDVD. A miniDVD
only fits about 15 minutes of DVD quality video on a 650 MB
CD-R(W).
- What is DVD+R?
- A DVD+R can only record data once and then the data becomes
permanent on the disc. The disc can not be recorded onto a second
time.
- What is DVD+R DL?
- DVD+R DL or called DVD+R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD+R.
The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 GB or around 8 540 000
000 bytes (called DVD-9) and a double sided dual layered disc
15.9 GB or around 17 080 000 000 bytes. (called DVD-18).
- What is DVD-R?
- A DVD-R can only record data once and then the data becomes
permanent on the disc. The disc can not be recorded onto a second
time. There also are two additional standards for DVD-R disks:
DVD-RG for general use, and DVD-RA for authoring, which is used
for mastering DVD video or data and is not typically available
to the general public.
- What is DVD-R DL?
- DVD-R DL or called DVD-R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD-R.
The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 GB or around 8 540 000
000 bytes (called DVD-9) and a double sided dual layered disc
15.9 GB or around 17 080 000 000 bytes (called DVD-18).
- What is DVD+RW?
- Short for DVD+ReWritable, a re-recordable DVD format similar
to CD-RW. The data on a DVD+RW disc can be erased and recorded
over numerous times without damaging the medium.
