What is Zune? Microsoft Zune Software Review
What is Zune?

About Microsoft Zune Player: Microsoft has filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) with the Serial Number 78953571 on the term Zune. Trademark Number US 021 023 026 036 038 is for use in a variety of Goods and Services which in its description most notably includes a "multimedia player, entertainment and communications devices; peripherals and accessories for use with multimedia player entertainment and communications device".

Zune Player Details: on September 15, 2006, Microsoft held a press conference to release official details about the Zune player. The player will have a 30 GB hard drive, built-in FM tuner with Radio Data System, 3.0-inch screen, and 802.11 wireless networking. The initial player will come in three colors¡ªblack, brown and white. Preloaded music and videos will be included. Supported codecs include H.264, MP3, WMA, WMV, MPEG4, JPEG and AAC. Microsoft will be using a new digital rights management (DRM) system to protect content on the Zune system, and the Zune will not support Microsoft PlaysForSure or other DRM systems such as FairPlay.

Microsoft has announced a music store called the Zune Marketplace that will integrate with the Zune player. They have announced "millions of songs" available for purchase using Microsoft Points, the same currency used on Xbox Live for per-song purchase. The Zune Marketplace can also be used as a subscription-based flat-fee service, if users purchase a monthly "Zune Pass".

Zune Player Features: will be able to connect to the Xbox 360, which will allow the user to stream music, videos, and pictures via USB. It is unknown whether the Zune can connect to an Xbox 360 via WiFi. One of the features that Microsoft has been pushing as a key differentiator is its Zune to Zune send feature. They have enabled the sharing of "full-length sample tracks of select songs", recordings, playlists and pictures with others. Tracks received from another person can be played for up to three days or three plays, whichever comes first, after which it will need to be purchased via the Zune Marketplace.
