What is Codec?
Codec stands for
Coder/Decoder.
Short for compressor/decompressor, a codec is any technology for
compressing and decompressing data. Codecs can be implemented in
software, hardware, or a combination of both. A video codec is a
software component that translates video between its uncompressed
form and compressed form. Some popular video codecs for computer
video include MPEG Codec, DivX Codec, XviD Codec, Indeo Codec and
Cinepak Codec etc.
A audio codec is a software component that translates audio between
its uncompressed form and compressed form. A audio codec is used
to compress digital audio files by discarding redundant data. MP3
encoders and decoders are audio codecs. The compression of a WAV
or AIFF file to MP3 format using a MPEG layer III audio codec is
encoding, similarly, an MP3 file can be 'decompressed' or decoded
to WAV or AIFF format using a separate audio codec. There are also
audio codecs for WMA, QuickTime 4 Streaming Audio, RealAudio and
other audio formats.
